A meteor crashed. A small meteor, barely the size of a plate, trailing smoke and orange sparks as it burned through the atmosphere. It shattered a window on the third floor of the biology department. Akakia stared at the smoldering rock embedded in the lab floor, steam curling from its surface, and thought: I should call someone. Instead, she touched it. The surface was warm, not hot. A tiny prick, like a cactus needle, and then nothing. The meteor was just a rock. She wrapped it in a paper towel, dropped it in her bag, and forgot about it. Three days later, she woke up hard. Not morning wood. This was different. A foreign, insistent pressure between her legs that had never been there before. She sat up in bed, blankets pooling around her waist, and looked down. Her roommate Sophia snored softly from the other bed, a mop of bright pink hair splayed across the pillow. Akakia slipped out of bed, walked to the bathroom on unsteady legs, and locked the door. She stood in front of the mirror, heart pounding. Her body looked the same. Pale, skinny, unremarkable. The same narrow shoulders, the same small breasts, the same flat stomach. But something was wrong. Something was different. She turned, checking herself from every angle, and then she saw it.
