The longship cut through the gray North Sea like a blade through flesh, its prow rising and falling with each wave. Astrid stood at the bow, her hand resting on the hilt of her axe, her pale hair whipping in the salt spray. She was seventeen, which in Viking years made her old enough to kill and young enough to believe she would never die.
“You’re going to fall overboard if you keep staring at the horizon like that,” Bjorn said, appearing at her side. He was built like a bear, with a beard that had never met a comb and a laugh that could carry across a battlefield. He was also, Astrid had learned, a very good friend.
“The horizon is where our future lies,” she replied, not taking her eyes off the distance. Somewhere out there was the island of Skellig, where the druids had hidden an artifact that could end the war. Somewhere out there was her destiny.
“Our future lies in not getting killed by the Saxons,” Bjorn countered. “Smaller goals, Astrid. You keep aiming for the stars and forgetting about the ground beneath your feet.
She finally turned to face him, a grin spreading across her face. “Since when has aiming small ever won a war?
He laughed, just as she knew he would. “Fine. Aim for the stars. But try to keep your feet on the ground while you do it.
He clapped her on the shoulder and walked back to join the rest of the crew. Astrid turned back to the horizon, but her mind was already elsewhere. Thinking about the secret she carried. The one that made her different from every other shield maiden in the fleet. The one that, if discovered, would get her killed or worse.
She had been born on the battlefield, her mother dying in the same charge that had brought victory to her clan. The midwife had taken one look at her and crossed herself. The warriors had looked away. But her father, the chieftain, had held her up to the sky and declared her blessed by the gods. He didn’t know how right he was.
The winds shifted, bringing the smell of salt and pine. Land was near. And with it, the battle that would change everything.
