The market square of Velaris was alive with the chaos of market day. Merchants hawked their wares from colorful stalls, children darted between the legs of adults, and somewhere a musician was playing a lute with more enthusiasm than skill. Fioren moved through the crowd like a ghost, her hood pulled low, her eyes scanning for threats.

She had been on the run for three weeks. Three weeks since she’d discovered the truth about her heritage. Three weeks since she’d been forced to leave everything behind. The people chasing her were getting closer, and she was running out of places to hide.

A hand grabbed her arm. She spun, a dagger appearing in her hand before she’d even registered the threat. But the face staring back at her was familiar. “Kael?” she breathed, lowering the blade. “What are you doing here?

Fioren swore under her breath and followed him through the maze of back alleys, her heart pounding. The change inside her was growing stronger every day. She could feel it, a power building in her core, waiting to be unleashed.
