Nyx had been hiding her gift her entire life. In the warrior schools of Sparta, where she’d trained since childhood, any sign of weakness was punished. But her gift wasn’t a weakness. It was the opposite, and that made it even more dangerous. A woman with a weapon between her legs was a threat to every man who had ever underestimated her. So she hid it, binding it flat against her body with leather straps, praying to the gods that no one would discover her secret.
The Oracle’s summons came on the eve of her twenty-first birthday. A scroll delivered by a hooded messenger, sealed with wax that smelled of incense and salt. Nyx unrolled it in her private quarters and read the words: “Come to Taphos. Your destiny awaits.
She should have burned it. She should have ignored the call and stayed in Sparta, where she was safe, where her secret was safe. But the words burned in her mind, and she felt an answering pull in her blood. The island of Taphos was calling to her, and she couldn’t ignore it any more than she could ignore the hunger that pulsed beneath her bindings.
She packed her gear, said goodbye to no one, and set out at dawn. The journey took three days. On the fourth morning, she saw the island rising from the morning mist: a tumble of white stone and green vines, crowned by a temple that glittered like a pearl in the early light. And at its base, waiting for her on the shore, was the lamia queen. Seraphis. Her scales caught the sunlight like scattered emeralds, and her eyes were the color of molten gold. Nyx felt her breath catch. Whatever she had expected, this wasn’t it. The queen was beautiful. Terrifyingly, magnificently beautiful. And she was smiling at Nyx like she knew every secret she’d ever kept.
