The wind howled across the frozen plains of Elysium, carrying the promise of snow and the memory of blood. Thorne stood at the edge of the village, his great axe resting on his shoulder, and watched the smoke rise from the burning longhouse.
The villagers had hired him to deal with the mage. A dark sorceress who had taken up residence in the mountain caves, whose magic had been corrupting the land.
The cave entrance was marked by runes that glowed with an eerie light. Thorne hefted his axe and stepped inside. In the center of the chamber, seated on a throne of stone, was the mage. She was beautiful, in the way that a storm was beautiful. Dangerous. Unpredictable. Magnificent.
“I’ve been expecting you,” she said. “Thorne, the barbarian. The man who kills mages.
“Then you know why I’m here,” Thorne growled.
“Oh, I know exactly why you’re here. But I don’t think you do.”
