Chapter 4
Ch 4

Seraphina's breath grew ragged. Her hips moved faster, but never rushed. She was savoring. She was claiming. She was loving. Eleanor felt her tighten around her, felt the phantom's core pulse, felt the ghost's body tremble as she approached the edge.

"Eleanor," Seraphina gasped. "I'm… I'm going to…"

"Let go," Eleanor whispered. "I've got you. I've always got you."

Seraphina cried out, a sound that shook the chandelier, that made the gaslights flare blue, that echoed through every room of Blackwood Manor. Her body tensed, then shuddered, then collapsed against Eleanor, her weight pressing her down into the cushions, her breath hot against Eleanor's neck. And in that moment, Eleanor felt it: the phantom's essence pouring into her, not as invasion, but as blessing. A warmth that spread through her veins. A rhythm that matched her own. A claim that was not ownership, but union.

They stayed like that for a long time. Breathing. Tied. Alive and dead and both.

When Seraphina finally lifted her head, her eyes were clear. Her hand stroked Eleanor's hair.

"Mine," she whispered.

"Yours," Eleanor agreed.

The weeks that followed were not ordinary. They were not meant to be.

Blackwood Manor changed. The cold receded. The dust lifted. The gaslights burned steady. Flowers bloomed in rooms that had not seen sunlight in decades. Servants came, hired through a distant agent, but they spoke in hushed tones, left meals on silver trays, and never asked questions about the lady who walked the halls in gowns of mist and moonlight.

Eleanor did not hide Seraphina. She cherished her.

She learned the ghost's rhythms. How she preferred the east wing at dawn, the library at dusk, the master bedroom at night. How she liked her tea with two sugars, how she hummed when she read, how she traced Eleanor's freckles like they were constellations. How she grew possessive, not in a cruel way, but in a way that made Eleanor feel seen, valued, claimed.

Seraphina, in turn, learned Eleanor. How she took her coffee black. How she wept when she thought no one was listening. How she loved the rain. How she needed touch, not as a cure, but as proof she existed. How she was afraid of being left behind, a fear that made her grip Eleanor's wrist a little too tightly, her voice a little too sharp, her eyes a little too dark.

One evening, Seraphina stood before the grand hall mirror, her back to Eleanor, her gown clinging to her hips, her posture rigid.

"What's wrong?" Eleanor asked, stepping into the room.

Seraphina did not turn. "They're coming."

"Who?"

"The Vance bloodline. The others. The solicitors. The ones who will say I am unnatural. Who will say you are bewitched. Who will try to take you from me."

Eleanor's jaw tightened. "Let them try. This is my home. You're with me. That's all that matters."

Seraphina finally turned. Her eyes were fierce. "You don't understand. I am a specter. I am bound to this house. If they break the vow, if they call me a curse, if they try to exorcise me…"

"They won't," Eleanor said firmly. "I won't let them."

Seraphina crossed the room in three strides, her hands framing Eleanor's face. "You would die for me?"

"I would live for you," Eleanor corrected. "And if the line blurs, I wouldn't care."

Seraphina's breath hitched. She pulled Eleanor into her arms, holding her so tightly Eleanor could feel her heartbeat against her chest. Slow. Steady. Real.

"I will not let you die," Seraphina whispered. "I will not let you go. I will claim you. Not as a ghost claims a victim. As a bride claims her husband. As a woman claims her lover. As I was born to do."

Eleanor rose on her toes, pressing her lips to Seraphina's. "Then claim me. Fully. No more waiting. No more half-steps. If you're going to be mine, be all of you. Take what's yours. Take me."

Seraphina's eyes darkened. Her hands slid down, over Eleanor's back, over her waist, to her hips. She turned them, pressing Eleanor against the wall, her body caging her in. The air grew thick. The gaslights dimmed. The house held its breath.

"Are you sure?" Seraphina murmured. "This is not a game. This is not a dream. Once I begin, there is no going back. You will feel me in your blood. You will hear me in your sleep. You will dream of me. You will wake to me. You will never be alone again. And I will never let you go."

Eleanor's hand slid up Seraphina's arm, her fingers tracing the line of her jaw. "I've been alone my whole life. I don't want to stop. I want more. I want you. All of you. Take me. Claim me. Make me yours."

Seraphina's breath caught. Her hands slid beneath Eleanor's dress, over her skin, up to her breasts, her thumbs brushing her nipples. Eleanor gasped, her back arching against the wall. Seraphina's mouth found her neck, her teeth grazing her pulse, her tongue soothing the bite. Eleanor's head fell back, her hands gripping Seraphina's shoulders, her body trembling with anticipation.

Then Seraphina's hand slid lower, parting her thighs, finding her core. Eleanor cried out, her hips jerking forward. The ghost's fingers moved in her, slow at first, then deeper, curling just right, and Eleanor's knees buckled. Seraphina caught her, holding her up, her other hand sliding down, over her stomach, to where her body waited, heavy and elegant, ready.
