Read the First Chapter

The fall was not a fall. It was a severing. One moment, Celestine was light and sound and the infinite chorus of celestial harmony. The next, she was gravity and silence and the sharp, horrible sensation of impact. She hit the ground like a stone dropped from heaven, which, technically, she was.

The impact crater was three feet deep and smelled of ozone. Celestine lay at the bottom of it, staring up at a sky that was suddenly, terrifyingly, the wrong shade of blue. Her wings were gone. Her halo was gone. The voice of the Creator was gone. All she had left was a body that felt too heavy, too solid, too real. And a head that was frustratingly, infuriatingly empty. She couldn’t remember why she had fallen. She couldn’t remember who had pushed her. She couldn’t even remember her own name.

A face appeared at the edge of the crater. A girl, maybe eighteen, with red hair like a bonfire and freckles scattered across her nose like constellations. She was holding a pitchfork, which she pointed at Celestine with trembling hands. “Are you… are you an angel?” she asked, her voice wavering.

Celestine opened her mouth to answer, but what came out was a sound halfway between a sob and a laugh. She didn’t know anymore. She didn’t know anything. The girl’s face softened, and she lowered the pitchfork. “Okay,” she said, as if deciding something. “Okay. You’re coming with me. My name is Lily. And you look like you need some help.

Celestine couldn’t argue with that. She let Lily help her out of the crater and followed her across the field, leaving a trail of scorched earth behind her. She didn’t know what she was. She didn’t know why she was here. But she knew one thing with absolute certainty: something was hunting her. She could feel it, a malevolent presence watching from the edges of her awareness. And when it found her, she would need to be ready. She just wished she knew what she was supposed to be ready for.
